Welcome aboard Norm,
I don't really shoot 35mm these days but when I do I also shoot Pentax. However I prefer Spoties and have a K1000 I also use. The last roll I developed was from more than a 2 year span. |

Hallo to Norm -- hope he has READ all these posts as he doesn't seem to have been too active so far !
Well, I started in 1951 when I was shown a 'Kodak Brownie Relex' by a school Mate at the Festival of Britain School trip and he invited me to go the the School Photo-Soc in the Chemmy Lab where 'Gabby' Heyes the Chemistry Master showed us how to make up our own developers from Chemicals, which I do TODAY !! I joined the South Essex Camera Club when I was 15 and when it folded when I was 21 i joined Barking PS where i was made President -- i got my 'Letters' ABIPP and ARPS in 1970 by submission of work on 'Scientific Applications' of Photography. Now am Past President of Brentwood Photographic Club.

I didn't quite begin before PentaxPete
Not quite as antique as PentaxPete, but I still have a print of my first roll of film, on 127 in a Kodak Vest-pocket folder, which I still have. I remember being shown the rudiments, can't remember the enlarger - probably a Gnome - but I still have the Wray Supar lens I bought with my pocket money. In the otherwise windowless tank-room on the top floor of my parents house a window gave onto the landing; the glass was red so clearly the tank-room was the darkroom, and there was a sink with running water. Sorted, to coin a phrase. I must have been 12 so that was 1955. Still at it, and every wherever we go to our friends houses there are displayed my prints of family and friends gatherings, grandchildren, etc. What is it about Black and White? Our modern 21st century children all go to B/w for their pictures on display.

The magic of the darkroom
I am in my final year teaching photography to 15-18 year old's. I still get a great buzz from seeing their excitement and wonder when the image first appears in the developing tray, just as I did in 1970 when I first went into a darkroom. What is interesting is the number of students who continue to work in the darkroom despite the ease of digital processing. There seems to be a move away from digital towards a much more hands on, personal approach.
