Default Durst Enlarger Help

I recently got hold of a Durst L1200 Laborator from a very nice man near Huddersfield, haven't had much chance to get to use it until now.
I need to get hold of some MG filters and just wanted to check on the size. In the image of the draw below the large window is, I presume, the size I need which is 4 1/2" but there is an oblong window with a 'spring' bar across it - what's this for?

Also, can anyone help on setting the variable light source on the Bimacap assembly?

Sorry for the ignorance but I'm only used to a fixed light source and colour head.

Cheers
Joe

You need 12x12cm filters, the thing at the front of the holder has something to do with the copying kit I think - ?.
The scale just shows you where the lamp is, the position of which is adjusted back af forth by the two knobs at the front, the lower one makes it go up and down.
Hope that helps a bit.

Have you thought of getting a set of MG filters that fit below the lens ?

Thats my solution

It means I can slip in and out different grade filters without the slightest risk of moving the head while I split grade print

Just a suggestion

Thanks, I haven't got the filters yet.
In your opinion, are they easier to use?
I always split grade my printing so need the best way of doing this in terms of results although being easier as well would be a bonus!

Yes - IMO

I am always concerned about the possibility of moving the head very slightly when changing filters.

Using the under lens set, you can slide the filters in and out without any risk of disturbing the head

I will confess - I am on my 3rd set of under lens filters - so may be a I am not your most objective commentator

The filters do fade over the years so need periodically replacing - on average I have changed them about every 10 years or so - its the hard grades that loose their edge. I found G5 faded back to G4 - I only noticed it when my prints seemed to loose a little punch

The filter carrier is at its maximum, with a 150mm/f5.6 enlarging lens (52mm filter thread)

The Schneider 150/f5.6 APO has a filter thread size of 55mm – in case you are interested
