Default 5x4 film holders

as I am looking about for a 5x4 large format film camera there's a lot I don't know one of these things is film holders can they be repaired if they let light in and what are the best makes and what ones do I avoid and what is a good price for a good one and are they all the same as in universal fit .thanks

Paul - First point, 5x4 inch folders and 18x13 cm have the same external dimensions; but one doesn't take the other's film. So you need to be careful there.

Fidelity are a good make.

That is just an initial response. Others with more points will chip in there.

13x18cm DDS are the same outside dimensions as 7x5 inch DDS, it's post WWII modern 9x12 holders that have the same outside dimensions as 5x4.

Toyo, Fidelity,, Kodak are all OK, check the slides for cracks, overall condition is a good indicator.

oops, sorry. That was the 7x5 user in me being crass. Paul still needs to be careful not to acquire 12x9 cm holders, though, if he wants to use 5x4 inch film.

I have Toyo and Fidelity DD holders both are very good but Toyo holders will not take Rollie IR400 or Rollie RPX400 (they are the only ones I've tried) but they do take all Ilford film. Fidelity take all films.
