Default User Manuals

Hi Just had a thought, would anyone be interested in starting a library of user manuals on the forum ( If it's legal ). As I'm sure that there are many pieces of equipment that do not have manuals "out there"

That is to say somewhere on the forum where we can list the user manuals we own and would be willing to share with other forum members.

It could be a simple as your user name, list of manuals like this

CambsIan - Paterson Auto Colortherm, Thermaphot ACP 400

Then if anyone has an interest in a particular manual they can PM the member direct for details.

What does anybody think.

That's a good idea. I'd investigate the possibility to create a space to upload directly the files, something like the links section.

Cheers, M.

Default Manual library:

This sounds like a very interesting idea. I was certainly grateful for information I have had in the past from forum members and it could bring in some fresh blood to the group to get manuals who stay on. Only last week, I got help from Marty in getting a manual for a Philips PCA 061 colour analyser.

I see the greatest problem in being how to classify the items. It would be useful if items could be cross referred. I mean something like a Jobo Comparator. It is an enlarger exposure meter made by Jobo. But could be in a list or manuals held under Jobo, or in a list of enlarger exposure meters.

Hope this is useful.

good idea, I'll readily contribute.
what if a contributor disappears? then his/her manuals will also disappear from the library! would it be feasible to establish a thread (or something similar) to which one can upload, thus the manuals would be secured for eternity (or slightly less)?

Copyright issues may cause problems for this unfortunately.

I think that is a great idea, copyright allowing, I would like to contribute and use other's manuals for equipment I have, but no longer have or ever had the manual to.

I don't think there is a copyright issue for two reasons:

1. Copyright exists to protect artistic works. A user manual is not an artistic work.

2. I don't think the manufacturers of equipment not made any more would really care if someone is offering copies of their manuals.

I think Steve makes two valid points. If manuals were copyright then someone called Butkus who specialises in manuals on his website would have been legally "jumped on" a while ago.

I think we are safe on this count

I think it's a good idea and would contribute anything I have if it's of any use. Equipment bought second hand seldom has the instruction book with it.

Looks like there may be a bit of interest in this idea.

A lot of the concerns and questions raised are things that I had never entered my head, when I made the suggestion, so it seems that there is a lot more to be sorted out than I had ever considered.

As for listing the manuals, is there a way that they could perhaps be listed alphabetically by maunfacturer, not sure if this is at all possible. This would perhaps negate the need to list by type, especially if the item can be used for more than purpose.

Anybody got any thoughts

Ian
