Default Spammers

Looks like the anti-spam software that was added a while back is failing, and initial moderation of new members has been disabled - In light of the three recent scumbags posting their incessant garbage, might it be an idea to turn on the two afore mentioned features ?

Failing that, perhaps a few more moderators with the power to silence the slimeballs.
Is there an admin option to limit the posting rate ?

Paul, PM sent to Bob, one of the mods earlier this evening past. At that stage I had only spotted two spam posst, both from the same seemingly U.S. pharmaceutical company. So in effect one spammer. Has there been two more and different spammers as you mention three?

We really are under attack then?

Mike

I've deleted them all, killed the spammers accounts and checked how they got in.

Essentially my fault as I let one of our anti-spam defences run low while I was away which let 4 spammers register and post without moderation. I have now re-locked that particular door...

Thanks to everyone who reported them.

Cheers, Bob.

Agree with Stan, I was also shocked at the damage. Thanks to the Mods for their work on sorting it out.

Thank you Admin and mods for your hard work and clean up of the site.
It just shows how much damage can be done in such a short time.

Christopher.

What amazes me is that people bother doing this crap. As if we're all going to see a thousand spam posts and then feel the need to buy a load of dubious pharmaceuticals from the web. The mind boggles.

In my experience it isn't them who have the work or even bother to work. It's the admin of various forums who have to work to clear their rubbish up.
I am administrator for a forum related to motor vehicles with a responsibility to the marque itself so we have to keep a close watch on the situation. We get spammers from all over the world, identified primarily from the Central and South American area, Africa and the old eastern bloc. The rubbish they send out is automated, all they do is start off the spambot and wait to see the chaos it causes.

Over the course of about an hour, we had: Typesesse with 56 posts, Rombamare with 62, and Autoncoginiot taking the biscuit with 85 - Not one related to photography, even digital

My thanks to Bob for jumping on this when he did - Not many of us are up and about during the early hours.

Thanks Bob. As FADU has been so successful in the past keeping spammers out I had forgotten how big an issue it is. Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz had to close their forum completely due to this. I think their webmaster was a one man band and had other things to do and simply couldn't keep up with the volume of attacks

A great pity as it was and would have continued to be a good forum
