I except washing the films must have been a logistical nightmare

The nearest fresh running water is about 4000 miles away.

I don't suppose they are bothered by problems of dust and mildew

Apparently, all these historic huts are in immanent danger of being blown away - they are being mercilessly eroded by ice crystals in the wind effectively shot blasting all the boards and trusses

A number of these historic huts have been blown away in the last few years and know one seems quite sure how to preserve those that remain.

I do think that the UK in particular is completely hung up on preserving things. It seems like the whole of the UK is being turned into museum so that people can come and gawp at us and how good we used to be.
More attention should be paid to building new and better things than dwelling on the past.
As to the hut, the only reason to preserve it is for people to gawp at it. They might just as well dismantle it and ship to London. That way people could actually see it instead of just paying to keep it for a very small minority who get to go there. Is it really worth keeping? It's just a wooden hut. It's not an architectural masterpiece of any significance.

I find myself agreeing with Rob there - in the case of the hut at least: either leave it to degrade and be demolished by natural forces or ship the whole lot back to the UK and put on display here.

The killer for me is the line from one of the people looking to "save" it:
Quote:
"The hut will look as it did 50 years ago, but not how it looked when Scott and his men were living there."
So, basically, they are going to tidy it up so the mess left by real people living real lives (which were soon to end) does not effect the sensibilities of the people who spend thousands of beer tokens on Antarctic cruises and give them a touch of the vapours. A classic case of completely missing the point by the Heritage Industry: the huts are only significant because Scott and his party lived in them - remove their effects and tidy up and that poignancy is lost, along with the whole point behind preserving them.

Ohhhh.. seem to have gone off on a bit of a rant there... ooooops.
