Thanks Bill and Nick His pictures were iconic. Does anyone know if the lung cancer was the result of smoking? He was of an era where such a practice was almost de rigueur for teenagers, both male and female but especially male, many of whom remained hooked forever or until a stage where it was too late

I recall scenes on newsreel footage of football grounds which had clouds above the fifty odd thousand spectators jam packed in the stadia. The clouds were created by forty nine thousand fags all lit at the same time

It seems almost unbelievable now

Mike

Default Chris Killip

I briefly worked with Chris when we were both assistants at Adrian Flowers' Studio in Tite St, London SW3. He said that it was there that he learned (or just became familiar with?) a large-format camera and a limited number of darkslides in a case.

Here are some of his photos. I can remember seeing "Cookie in the Snow, Seacoal Camp, Lynemouth, Northumberland, 1984" in a photography magazine article about Chris Killip's work back in the 1980s and thinking Wow.

Often well known photographers of one country are not known in another. Therefore I am glad that Nick posts about artcles and exhibitions and I learn about some very good photgraphers from the UK. Chris Killip is an exemption. I know his excellent work for quite some time as it was also discussed in German magazines. Photo journalism at its best. Some of the pictures indeed iconic.

As a resident of Northumberland, I took many pictures of two of my favourite subjects : Industrial Landscape and the "Coast" during the 1980s, and i was allways "guided" and influenced by the work of Chris Killip, which was new and topical at the time. I visited Lynemouth on many occasions.
A really major loss to documentary photography. I am sure in better times that the SIDE Gallery will host a retrospective of his work.
