Default Nikon FE problem

I have a Nikon FE which is behaving strangely. It will give a meter reading at full aperture, but once you stop down, the needle in the viewfinder drops to the bottom of the screen. I’m guessing that the problem is connected to the ring on the camera body, around the lens mount, which moves when the lens aperture ring is turned. I took the mount off today to have a look. There is a circular spring under the lens mount which is part of the lens mounting system, then the moving ring. It’s connected to a point inside the body with what appears to be a fine elastic thread. This causes the ring to return to the starting position ( to follow the aperture ring of the lens). I can’t see any electrical connection. Does anyone know how the variation of aperture is communicated to the meter? The diaphragm remains fully open until the shutter is fired.

I don't know specifically about the FE, but in general I've seen 2 types of aperture linkages...one uses a variable resistor (or reostat) plate that the aperture ring slides against. The other type is a cable and pulley system that connects to the iso dial and turns it. There are probably other types as well. If its the first type, it could be the resistor plate is dirty or worn out. If its the later, it could be the cable has broken. Either way this would require professional service. Its probably cheaper to find another FE body.

Thanks Tony. It looks like the cable type connection, however I have since disposed of the camera to someone who may be better placed to fix the problem. It was very annoying as the camera is otherwise in good condition.
