Default Bill Jay RIP

I've just read that Bill Jay has passed away. For those who don't know the name he was a British writer who moved to the US many years ago and wrote "End Notes" in Lens Work. He was a big influence on British Photography in the 60's when he was involved in starting a couple of excellent photo mags. I shall miss his input in Lens Work for not only was it informative but full of humour.

He also published a book of his portraits of the many photographers he met and interviewed. I got it in my christmas stocking last year, it's called Album and is a good read as well as showing some excellent portrait photography.

Thanks for the link Fintan. It's quite a site. The Hindenburg Explosion article and history of the accredited photographer is a great read in particular.

Very saddened to hear this news; I knew that he had been in poor health for some time.

His contributions to the medium of photography are beyond measure, not only did he help create one of the best journals on photography that the world has seen (Creative Camera) but went on to make a career out of his insightful writings and teaching.

If there is one book that should be on every photographer's reading list it is 'On Being a Photographer: A Practical Guide', co-authored with David Hurn. (Currently listed as unavailable on Amazon and Lenswork but hopefully to be reprinted again soon).

Roy, that's amazon.co.uk . On amazon.com you'll find secondhand copies at silly prices; but on abebooks.com there are two copies more reasonably priced plus a CD-ROM that I hadn't heard about.

Just had the Guardian Picture Desk contact me, seems they are preparing an obituary of Bill Jay and are after pictures of him, or by him.

I don't have any personally, but just in case anyone does, please PM me and I'll send the e-mail address of my contact there.
