Formula TF3 Alkaline Fixer
Thought I'd appeal to you clever souls in FADU land.
I have all the ingredients to make the Alkaline Fixer TF3 on page 274 of the Darkroom Cookbook. It calls for " Ammonium thiosul(f)phate 57-60% solution. 800ml - this is the bit that is causing me some confusion. Does he mean Make up a 60% solution - 60g in 1 litre of water then use 800ml of this? Help please Andrew B

That's the way I read it Andrew. Perhaps someone else will confirm?

Yes, that's the way I read it too; use 800ml of 60% of Ammonium thiosulphate.

I guess I'll go ahead on that basis then.
Thanks

No, sorry, you are an order of magnitude out.
An x% solution is x grams of the solute in a final volume of 100ml of the solution (the "%" tells you it is "parts per hundred" and as we know, 1ml of pure water = 1g). A 60% solution will be 60g of the solute in a total of 100ml of solution. So, in this case add 480g (8x60g) of hypo to say 600ml and dissolve it and then top up to 800ml. Mind you, that's an awful lot of solute in a small amount of water - heat the water to around 40c to help it dissolve. If it won't all dissolve in 600ml, add another heated 50ml of water and try again - and so on up to 800ml. Good luck, Bob. P.S. I hear that TF-3 smells quite strongly of ammonia... Maths never was my strong point!!
It does seem an awfully strong solution though. I'll press on regardless Andrew

If you want to make sure, maybe you can post something on Steve Anchell web site in the forums section. http://www.anchellworkshops.com/
