Default Lens Hoods

I bought a new lens recently for my Olympus. It was a 24mm which came with the original lens hood. Took it out the other week on a sunny day so fitted the lens hood but found when developing the negative you can see the lens hood?

Half way through I switched to my 35-70 zoom also with the correct lens hood. Towards the end you can also see that lens hood which is when I think I had it zoomed in to 70.

Am i doing something wrong?

Thanks
David

I presume you're not putting the lens hood on top of a filter?
So a filter between the lens and the lens hood.

Yes, almost certainly. Especially with wide angle.

A good lens hood should allow for a filter. I'm surprised Olympus supply a round lens hood for a WA lens, the Pentax hoods are shaped for the 35mm format.

The lens has a UV filter on it. Am I best just to leave the filter on and forget about using the lens hood?

I think you are better off getting the more appropriate 'wide angle lens lens hood,' for whatever lens you need one for. I had one years ago for my 28mm and wider lenses. It looks quite different to a standard one, being much wider and flatter. Mine was made of rubber, but just looking on ebay, there are also metal ones available. With these, there should be no problem with having a e.g. UV filter already on the lens.

They come in a range of prices, with the cheapest being from China, if you don't mind the wait. The UK only listing on ebay, gives an awful lot of dedicated hoods from one seller, each listed as being for one particular camera. Mine was listed as a general, fit all type and I had no problems at all with it.

I don't use it as often now, as all my newer lenses have come with a (usually petal style) lens hood at purchase.

As for the zooms, one usually gets sight of the (wrong) hood with the wider ends of them and not when zoomed out.

Also, try to avoid shooting into the suns direction, for either with or without a lens hood, as you might get flare.

Check it out:

I wouldn't buy any of those lens hoods, the Pentax Takumar hoods are more effective. I have a couple that I use on LF lenses.

At wasn't planning on getting another lens hood really as the manufacturer one should work. It seems it was my error by putting the filter on.

In a SLR you should be able to see if the hood is the right one - check the corners of the viewfinder image for light fall-off, comparing what you see with and without the hood.

This is not a perfect check, because most SLR viewfinders (except Nikon F series) cover only about 95% of the image; but is good enough.
