Default Your prints after you're gone

I wonder has anyone ever considered what might happen to their prints after they departed this life?

I've thought about this too, Vincent; but I find that I wonder about negatives rather than prints. My solution so far has been to arrange them in archival sleeves or pockets, in Secol ring binders or pockets. I also have them all scanned and burnt on to DVDs (yes, this raises questions; but I am also thinking about SD cards).

My daughters, one of whom has a photographer partner, can agree to do whatever they like with it all. They have copies of the index galleries of the lot.

The only exception is my 7x5 work, which is too big for me to scan. I have negatives in one drawer, proofs in another and the camera log books with them.

I know this is a bit obsessive for a rank amateur; but I am after all a retired librarian cum archivist.

Who cares what happens when I am gone?
I am afraid my children won´t ...
My work may not be valuable for future generations ...

All of my prints and negatives will go to the Jersey heritage and Socitie Jerrais I have spoken to the people involved and it is arranged, a lot of my subjects are of historical value, many at historic sites, and the landscape here is in some cases changing so quickly, indeed, I have many images of things that are long gone, and the they have been shown many of my prints/negatives and are very keen

Given that most of us here on FADU may have already seen the "best years of our lives" this may not be the cheeriest subject for a Sunday

I will assume that if I go first( sounds a lot better than die ) the wife will keep most- probably because she might not think to look for them

Now we move onto the serious bit. The last vestiges of my existence are now being rounded up. It's house clearance time

My son may keep some of my B&W shots of his marriage and those of his kids that I have taken but most of the rest will "Go West" as they say. Only a little way West however when he offers them to the Imaging Warehouse near Stratford as a reminder of their own analogue origins

The wife has just popped into the study as I am writing this to say lunch is ready. On the wind-up gramophone she has just lowered that old heavy head and steel needle onto the '78 of Stanley Holloway's "My Word You Do Look Queer".

The alternative record was that old uplifting "Keep Right On To The End Of The Road" by Sir Harry Lauder.

However thinking about "after I am gone" has given a macabre meaning to "keeping on to the end of the road" as well.

We Celts, Vincent, do melancholy very well

Mike

Kenro is working on a special asbestos-lined filing system so I can take them with me.

Default Good idea...

Hi,

For the sake of discussion, how much volume would each of our life's work (photographically speaking) take up? 1. Negs / binders / photo logs. 2. Fine prints.

For me 1. negs right now 3x standard ring binders (not lever arch). 2. No large enlargements (yet) so just 6x 12 by 9 frames.

So for me maximum .5 cubic metre.

Can we take a quick straw poll AS WE ARE TODAY, Sunday 29.4.18, to get a feel for this... Even the ex librarian / archivists, please estimate cubic metres...

Robert

But your work is beautiful. That is not nothing. The beauty will live so long as it is seen. Please give the future the chance of the pleasure your images have given me (and many others).

Most of my work is portraiture and it goes to the families I've just photographed. I keep the negs, contact sheets and printing details, and donate the prints. If it's only the work that I keep, slides, negs, printing details, then yup, 0.5 cubic metres should do it. The wardrobes full of camera kit and lighting kit, and the darkroom overfull of kit might take a bit more storage space!
