The only glass person I heard of using glass plates coated them themselves, but it was a while ago and I can't remember where I read about it, sorry can't be of more help. But I will keep a look out

Found this link to Harman who have a glass plate coating machine, but it is not something they do routinely, read about half way down page.

I’ve never tried this but I assume that one could coat glass with the liquid emulsion that is available, which presumably would develop as a positive.
I think our Friend wiesmier has worked with glass plates and may comment.

Buy some old ones off The Bay. I have loads to use from that. And they are all terrible !
Otherwise, look for BosseB on Flickr as he has worked with self-coating glass plates and produces nice work too. Lovely chap as well.

I will contact Ilford and ask when they do some standard plates to do a few more, as long as it's not too expensive.

As you haven't got back yet I expect you got the answer that they don't do them, and if they did, start re-mortgaging!

When we did the 'Silver Gelatin' book in 1995 I spent a lot of time trying to perfect plate coating. The existing 'off the peg' emulsions are blue sensitive and designed for printing, so they're slow and high contrast when used in-camera. But you can get interesting results, although with living moving subjects you're back in mid-Victorian times, headclamp required!

Emulsion coating with no blemishes is also difficult, and uneven coverage at the edges & corners is to be expected - but I was using 8x10". If you worked with 5 x 4" I think it would be much easier. One certainly ends up with a neg which is a fascinating artifact in itself. I've got my collection at work, if anyone wants to have a look fix up a time with me.
