Default Gilles Peress

A new book (€425!) has been published of Gilles Peress's photos of the troubles in Northern Ireland.

And here are some samples from the Steidl website.

I lived in Belfast from 1968 to 2007, spanning the period the book covers. Through the mid-70s I worked in west Belfast, at the Royal Victoria Hospital. We lived in "mixed" areas but I cycled to work and saw quite a lot. Friends were killed.

The price is a nonsense, as it effectively deprives the book of a buying readership.

O'Hagan's review is interesting and perceptive, as usual; but I found the selection of photographs illustrating it stagey and contrived, almost theoretical and not matching the memories I have of things like that. As well as that, there's no universal agreement here about what actually happened (I shouldn't think there is, anywhere).

Sorry to sound so negative about this. I think there's a place for photobook narratives of individual themes and events (and I have a few of those).

But - thank you, Nick, for posting this.

That's a polite understatement in my opinion
