Fuji 690 ?
Spending time with the family, not doing any work, drinking too much, eating too much... after a while one's mind wanders off and hair brain schemes and ideas start popping up... So this year it's, I think I would like a Fuji 690
After years of working in large and ultra large format, as well as medium format, two years ago I started working exclusively on 35mm. My reasoning was that my work had become more intuitive and I wanted to work in a very fast, spontaneous way. I still want to do that but I would like to make bigger prints again so, how about the Fuji 690? Have any of you guys had one or used one? What can you tell me about them? I have a Mamiya RZ67 with a couple of lenses I don't use anymore so I guess I could sell that for an equivalent value so I shouldn't need to break in to the ever diminishing savings. Advice, warnings, ideas or recommendations invited. Thanks in advance. Steven |

I owned a 670, which I've just sold. Essentially the same, just the wind on and masking differs I think. Anyway a good, simple and robust lump of a camera; not so much a lump as the RZ though. Good quality fixed lens in either 60 or 90mm from memory. Ffords have a couple in stock.

A pro friend of mine had one for many years and he produced some superb work from it and like most pros he gave it some stick. I borrowed it a few times a remember thinking how abused it looked but it worked beautifully and the lens was great! It was used for a lot of his SAS work (Surfers Against Sewerage) so as you can imagine it spent a lot of its time on beaches in adverse conditions. If you want a rugged 6x9 rangefinder with a great fixed lens - nothing better :-)

The lens (Fujinon 90/3.5) is excellent and I'm very fond of this purely mechanical camera; it's always my first choice when I need to travel light and yet want large format quality. ...forgot to mention that I've often used it with 220 film as well, very handy having 24 exposures available when needed. The cumulative exposure counter is a nice touch too; mine is currently reading 3200.

I have one of these too. I bought it in fairly battered condition .. it does not look pretty but works perfectly. I find it pretty hard to use hand-held, though I know some people do this successfully. Image quality is fantastic. I love the sheer simplicity of it - aperture ring and focus and that's about it ... I love the way I feel that I could drop it off a cliff and it would probably still work afterwards.
Having said that, I am not crazy about the 6x9 image ratio. I will always crop images made with it to closer to 6x8, so in my case, the extra large neg doesn't really gain me that much over a 6x7. Since I now have a 6x7 rangefinder, I am toying with the idea of selling the Fuji .... hmmnnnn .... |

I've had a GSW690III for some time - Do it, you won't regret it on a quality basis. Rangefinders are rather an acquired taste, though - be sure that's what you want before jumping in. Hand holding outdoors easy with 400 film
There is a manual available for free, here: http://fuji.snaefell.de/FUJI_GW_GSW_II_INSTR.pdf Aynsley |
