Default Adding Attachments

I could have sworn we already wrote one of these, but I couldn't find it, so...

To add an attachment from your computer:

1. Either click on the "Post Reply" button on the left at the top and bottom of the existing messages, or on the "Go Advanced" button under the smaller message editor box near the bottom of the screen. This opens the advanced editor screen.

2. Click on the "Manage Attachments" button underneath the larger text box on that new screen. Alternately, click on the paper clip in the Advanced Editor's menu section above the text entry box. Another smaller window pops up where you select the files to upload. This window also has a list of allowed file sizes in the bottom half in the "Attachment Key" section (you may need to expand this using the little arrow at the right hand side if it is collapsed).

3. Click on one of the "Browse..." buttons. Your usual "Select file" window will pop up. Browse to the file you wish to upload. Once selected, the name should appear next to the "Browse..." button. Note that the file has not been uploaded yet, merely tagged for uploading.

4. Repeat step 3 if required using the other Browse buttons for other files.

5. Upload the files to the forum by clicking the "Upload" button. Once uploading has completed, you can close this window.

To add an attachment from a website:

1 Underneath the "Browse..." buttons is another section titled: "Upload File from a URL"

2. Add the full address (URL) to the file (including the filename).

3. Click the Upload button.

4. The rest is similar to the above and the file size limits are the same.

Note that the site needs to have access to the file's location, so the file needs to be open access: if it is somewhere that requires a login to access, it will not be able to fetch a copy of the file. In this case you will need to download a copy to your computer and upload it from there.

Current Attachments:

A list of files that were successfully uploaded after clicking the "Upload" button are listed here.

Misc:

To close the Manage Attachments window either use the usual X at the top right (Windows PCs) or scroll down to the "Close this window" button at the bottom.

Once the window has closed, clicking on the "Preview Post" button should show the attachments listed with thumbnails at the bottom of the preview.

To remove an attachment, click the "Manage Attachments" button again and scroll to the list of uploaded files and you will see a "Remove" button next to it.

Errors:

If one or more of your files exceed the size criteria in the "Attachment Key" section you may get the cryptic error message: "Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing". This unhelpful nonsense is built into the software and not something we can change, unfortunately. Check your file sizes if you get this error, and try again.

Thanks for uploading this info Bob, but the way that I upload a picture from my computer is different, because what you describe doesn't actually come up on my screen...??

So, BEFORE #1, you need to start writing a message and click on PREVIEW to get the ADVANCED button to appear.

Clicking on ADVANCED brings up another line of buttons / icons.

To upload from your computer, click on the PAPERCLIP button, which is on the top line. This allows you to choose files to upload.

To upload from the web, you need to provide a page link. This can be entered by clicking on the second line, where a small square button with a MOUNTAIN AND SUN is on it. Click on this and it will ask for a webpage link.

I hope this helps others who seem to have a different page front to Bob.

Bob, your note is precisely correct in all respects when you use the "quick reply" route. Maybe just add that using the "Post Reply" route gives you the Advanced options straight off, with the rest of the steps as you describe.

Thanks both - I've made the suggested additions.

There's always more than one way to bake a cake and you get used to using one method

Cheers, Bob.
