Somewhere to stay in the Lakes?
I'm planning on popping up to the Lakes in October to do some LF photography but it's not a location I've been to recently... (like 20 years!). I have quite a lot of info regarding locations but just wondered if anyone could recommend somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay that's fairly central to the Lakes... around Grasmere perhaps?

Rydal Hall is my usual "go to" spot in the Lake District - They offer facilities for a wide range of budgets from rufftie-tuftie camping (but you don't have to dig your own toilet pit) through to full bed/breakfast/dinner. There is also Yurts and "Pods" (glorified sheds with heating) on site for families & small groups.

There's a ton of youth hostels in the lakes, although they are not as cheap as they were back in the day.
I had a recent trip to the lakes and stayed in a few, my favourite was the coniston coppermines hostel - unique location! |

Castlerigg Hall is a short walk from Keswick, the site has a good little breakfast room, full english, brilliant showers, a small bar, camping or B&B. Cracking walk from the campsite overlooking Derwent Water to Derwent Hotel, small boat ride back to Keswick, uphill walk back to startpoint. A good day out.

Hi Paul
I have stayed at least three times at the Greenhowe caravan Park. www.greenhowe.com/ I always like my own space so this place is ideal, and the vans are updated regular. It's in a great location, 10 minutes from Blea Tarn, 15 minutes from Elterwater, and is in the Heart of the Langdales, with The Dungeon Ghil Pub practically on your doorstep. You don't have to book a whole week, but I usually do, but arrive on Sunday when the weekenders are all going home. I will usually have the whole valley to myself at that time of year. Hope this helps, if not you, then maybe somebody else. Cheers Stoo |

I've used Cumbrian Cottages a few times too.
Renting a cottage or static caravan is not exceptionally cheap but it does confer maximum freedom. If there are two or more of you it does usually become cheaper than an hotel tho. Good luck with the weather, and have fun up there! |

Looks like I'll be following in your footsteps - Heading up there last week in October and returning first week of November. Hoping the weather will put off the casual tourist yet remain nice enough for camping.

Thanks for all the info chaps, as I'm only going to be there for three days I have decided on a small hotel in Ullswater. Camping could have been an option in the summer but as we're approaching Autumn I do like my creature comforts
