An alternative version of D76 / ID11
I'm just resurrecting this, as I mainly use home mixed ID11 / D76 and unlike Pete and others, I've never noticed any huge increase in activity as I've used it.
Currently I am trying out home mixed E76, which has produced some lovely negatives for me, which so far have printed straight with a grade 3 filter - my usual go to. But, further browsing of 'The darkroom cookbook', I've noticed that there are a number of versions of D76 / ID11, with one of them said to have NO increase in the developer's activity. Not noticing any difference in my mixes, I'm not sure if I would notice any difference, but it may be worth a go for others who do. Terry S |

I've always used ID-11 replenished,it needs a few hours from mixing to settle. we would leave it overnight, or over a weekend. It would last 6 to 8 months and you would spot a slight change.
The only time I used it dilute was at the request of a friend, and that was at 1+2. Some years ago someone posted a photo of an Australoan box of D76 which gave accurate percentages of the ingredients, it showed that the then current formula was between D76 & D76d. An Ilford patent for a new developer show ID-11 as a reference developer but with 50% more Borax, 3g rather than 2g.. The reason for the buffering changes is D76, and its many exact clones, were formulated to be replenished. In more recent years with amateurs usually using it dilute as a one shot developer Kodak and Ilford increased the buffering to give greater consistency when diluted particularly at 1+3. D76d uses 8g Borax & 8g Boric Acid as its buffering, the Australian box indicates a change in D76 to 4g Borax & 2g Boric Acid for the buffering. Ian |

Kodak Developer D-76 Water to about 50C (125 F) KODAK ELON Developing Agent 2.o g Sodium Sulfite (anhydrous) 100.0g Hydroquinone 5.0g Borax (Granular) 2.0g Water to make 1.0 litre I am not sure if you want the published formula or exactly what is on the Australian box in question.

The Autralian packaging gave these precentages, there was also a matching MSDS.
1.8% Boricacid 3.6% Borax 4.5% Hydroquinone As we know D76 contains 5g per litre Hydroqinone then the Boric acid must be 2g/l and the Borax 4g/l. It also apperas the chane was made many yeras ago in the 1960s. Ian |
