Default X-Rite 810 replacement bulb 820-52

One of the replacement bulbs for the X-Rite 810 has a part number 820-52 and is currently selling between £350 and £450 on eBay.

Does anyone know what type of bulb this is? Any information might help to identify a suitable equivalent bulb.

Out of curiosity I just looked up the bulb and couldn't believe the price, for what seems very little:

But having managed, so far, without one of these densitometers, could you explain in easy language what they actually do and why some seem to think of them as indispensable?

Many thanks,

Terry S

I don't think these densitometers are actually going to help me with my photography. I'm just trying them out to see what they do. It all depends on how deeply I get into the subject of the zone system.

Photographers and radiographers used them as a quality control for film and for checking the characteristics of the film they're using.

I'm still investigating the potential

I had a similar problem with a Macbeth densitometer. The bulbs are highly specialised. Mine cost $99 10 years ago. It's not going to be easy to find or very affordable. These old machines are all but obsolete, unfortunately.

Here's a link I've found, only $350...

Have you already contacted X-rite?
Not that I hold out much hope.

Well spotted Marty on finding it for $350 (which is £260 in my money)!

You've prompted me to give X-Rite a try. Let's see ...

I have bought specialist bulbs in the past from a UK company called Medlamps. They sell bulbs for use in a variety of instruments. It might be worth checking with them.
Given the quoted prices, I would suggest that it may well be cheaper to buy a complete densitometer. The one I have, made by Tobias rather than X-rite, cost about £30.

I'll email Medlamps and ask.

Yes, the X-Rite cost me less than the lamps. It's working but I'm nervous about these lamps disappearing - hence my search for a reasonably priced spare. There's another lamp in the base of the unit but that's much cheaper at around £40.

Default Medlamp reply

Medlamp replied to my email but sadly they can't help.
No reply from X-Rite yet.

X-Rite have replied to say they no longer supply parts (including lamps) for their 810 densitometers.
