Greatest Image
If you had to choose what you thought was the greatest image ever recorded as a photograph, what would it be? For me (obvious perhaps) it would be the puddle jumper.

For me there are perhaps too many, but AA's, 'Moonrise Over Hernandez' would feature highly.

My long time favourite is "Grotto in Berg" by Herbert Ponting taken in 1911. Not only is it a superb picture, but the technical difficulties in producing it are quite unimaginable; at least to me.

A self-portrait of an old friend showing the beaming smile of achievement as he rested for a moment among the flags on the summit of Everest.
His camera was retrieved a year later.

Like Trevor I think there are quite a few. Picnic on the banks of the Marne is a real favourite. In it, HCB seems to capture the essence of the French. The James Ravilious photograph of Ivor Brock rescuing a lamb in a blizzard also speaks volumes to me.

One of my favourite photographers is Walker Evans and one of his greatest images, to me, is Bethlehem graveyard and steel mill. Pennsylvania. Such a strong political statement contained in a seemingly simple landscape.

Like Dave, I am a fan of Herbert Ponting's work and also that of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. I wouldn't want to narrow it down to one image though.
On a lighter note, there is a picture in David Niven's book The Moon's a Balloon which shows him horizontal in mid flight jumping into a swimming pool whilst wearing a deerstalker hat, holding a bow and arrow and smiling at the camera. I think that is a great photograph. Unfortunately, I can't find an internet version I can link to. Steve. |

Like Trevor, there are too many but the one that comes to mind for me is "After the Storm" by Brad Washburn.
There are so many really great photographs that we could point to and the "greatest" is personal and subjective -- which is what makes this so much fun!!!

There are too many, but for me it is a photograph of my wife, whose mother is Thai, and whom she takes after in looks, in her mothers National costume, and taken by her Sister, as she is one of the hardest people to photograph and in this one she is just so relaxed and obviously enjoying the experiance,Richard

This image taken using a Hasselblad camera on 24th December 1968 – Apollo 8. Should be viewed vertical; with the Earth on the left.
