Default John Blakemore sells his archive

This months issue of B&W carries news that John Blakemore has sold his archive to Birmingham Central Library for £91,650 - the archive includes his negatives and hand-made books.

Good to know his work will now be secure for future generations to study and enjoy.

I did wonder why there also but wasn't he born in the Midlands? I also wondered how they worked out the odd £50 at the end?

According to the article the funds came from several sources - £42,695 from the Art Fund, undisclosed amounts from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Friends of the National Libraries and the University of Derby where JB is currently Emeritus Professor of Photography.

He was born in Coventry - wherever that is? - never heard of it.

Yes everywhere south of Derby was "there be dragons' land" for the Jacobites as well and they never ventured further.

With good reason. Charlie said to the mayor of Derby:"My men are getting restless. The water has been getting worse as we go South. Down here it makes the whisky taste terrible. The good mayor being a staunch follower of George saw his opportunity and introduced Charlie to the Severn Trent Water official who said:" You're going to London? Wow! If you think the water here is bad then wait till you get to London.

The rest is history. :

Mike

That seems frighteningly cheap for the quality and extent of his work. The good news is that it will be cared for.
