Default Simon Marsden

Simon Marsden states on his web site that his enlarger exposure times average between 12 to 15 minutes.

Wow, and we tell people who talk about say more than 1 min exposures that there is probably something wrong!

I wonder if this refers to the time it takes from first test strip to final exposure i.e. he works on each print for 15 mins " under the enlarger" as it were to produce the final print for sale but to get there he has a trail of "dead" prints buried in the waste bin.

If he really means a 15 min exposure for the final print then it might be "intricate" as he states but at least he can be relaxed about dodging and burning :

Maybe he is just trying to justify the prices of his prints

Those prices are about double some other well known photographers.

We all make mistakes and I think it is unfair to criticize any individual website without giving that person the chance to respond.

Should be seconds. He might die of hunger when doing a printing session if those times are real.

It may or may not be a mistake, but I have approached those sort of times when printing a difficult print lots of dodging, burning and masking was required. The total lamp on time may not be much more than two or three of minutes, but filter and mask changing sometime takes a lot of time.

Why do you assume that it is a mistake?

He clearly states;
"...(average exposure time in the enlarger is 12 - 15 minutes)..."

But without knowing more about his printing process and especially the paper he's printing on, it's hard to say.

I emailed from the website out of curiosity and this is the reply I had regarding this from someone who I guess helps run his business. I have enjoyed his work for quite a while and have several of his books.

"He tells me that the total average exposure time in the enlarger of 12-15 minutes is indeed made up of several shorter exposures when dodging, burning in etc."
