Disagree - there's far worse than that one.

Watch out for multiple titles by the same author. There are a few people out there who seem to have written the same book many times over and had it published under a clever disguise. Tim Rudmans books are good, as are those by Eddie Ephraums. They are about traditional monochrome work. I recently bought a couple of books about flash photography. The first, by Bryan Peterson is very good. He has also written one on Exposure which gets good reviews. The other was 'The Hot Shoe Diaries' by Joe? McNally which is also good and a laugh as well. For infrared, I have found Hugh Milsoms book to be the best. I think it is part of a series published by Fountain Press. I'm sure you know the book trade better than most, but I find second hand and charity shops to be a great source for books on traditional photography, many of which are no longer in print.

Thanks for all your welcomes and suggestions. For now I have bought "Way Beyond Monochrome", it looks to be quite comprehensive.

I wondered if anyone would mention books by the likes of Sontag or John Berger or perhaps Barthes or Guibert. I don't think Sontag's "On Photography" is as bad as all that but obviously these books are not about the process of photography, more the space they occupy in culture.
