Hi from Essex.....again.....well, sort of......!!
Hi folks.
I'm Paul and I live in darkest Essex (Braintree to be precise). That said, I'm a northerner (originally from Stockport, Cheshire) but have moved around the UK with work since 1988. Although I'm a keen film user (Hasselblad 500 c/m, Canon F1-N, A1, EF, Voigtlander Vito and Zeiss Ikon Nettar) and have been since 1974, I thoroughly enjoy using my Nikon D700 as well for a "quick fix". I used to have my own darkroom at home but I don't have the space for one anymore. My negs are processed by a local pro photographer and I scan them using an Epson V750 and post process using CS3 and LR2. Consequently, most of my output is probably best described as "hybrid" - although I intend to have chemical prints produced from some of my better negs. Hopefully, this shameful admission doesn't bar me from membership here. Anyway, I'll try to behave myself an post a few shots. I'm always open to new learning experiences, so don't hesitate to give me constructive criticism. Best to everyone. Paul. |

Hi Paul, Hopfully the info here will help you come around to finding room for a dark room.

Hi and welcome Paul. Space for a darkroom is often a problem. If you intend staying where you are for some time and have backyard/garden space then Dave Miller's solution of a darkroom shed is one possibility and unless there is a spare room in the house it's probably the best solution.
An enlarger wheeled in and out of a bathroom that can be easily blacked out is another possibility. Finally enrolling on an evening B&W course at a local college which retains a darkroom is the third possibility if such a college exists within reasonable travelling distance. Some camera clubs still have a darkroom so this may be an option. Best of luck Mike |

Welcome aboard Paul.
I suspect you represent the majority of film shooters these days, scanning and printing digitally but if we can persuade you to make room for a darkroom, we will try ... Enjoy your visits here. Cheers, Bob. |

Thanks for the encouragement, guys.
The house we live in is a very small (e.g. modern) two-bed semi. Chances are that we will be here for a while as moving to add a bedroom / darkroom is a very costly business and I fully expect interest rates to be on the rise soon.... I'm a member of a local camera club but, alas, they have been "seduced by the dork side" and are almost totally digital. I will, however, see if I can find one with the requisite gear as there's nothing better than the mucus-membrane destroying aroma of monochrome chemicals....aaaahhhhh!!! In the meantime, is there any reason why "cleaned up" and lightly processed scans can't be posted in the gallery? I'm not intending to use the site as a dumping ground for crap-snaps but it'd be nice to join in the fun if the right image came along. I promise there'll be no HDR treatment or psychedelic photoshopping...... |

Quote:
“Posting Images In order to avoid confusion on the matter we thought it appropriate to make a statement to cover the use of images on this forum that have been captured digitally other than by scanning. We have several areas of this Forum that allow the posting of images, and we think that clarification of the types of images for each will help you decide what is acceptable. Print / slide scanning. Direct scanning of your print, or slide is the preferred method of obtaining a digital file for use in the Albums and Galleries. You will find advice in the Article section that details the issues surrounding colour balance that may assist you. Negative scans. Where possible these should be limited to the situation where you wish to discuss the negative rather than a print from it. We recognise that some of you are using film, but are not yet able to produce prints. We will accept converted negative scans in such circumstances, but ask that you note the fact that it is a negative scan on your submission, since this will assist those wishing to comment. Digital snaps. This forum is not anti-digital, simply pro-film and darkroom. The use of digital captures is a useful tool that is not excluded, but we ask that their use is limited to the illustration of Posts or Articles where it is not practical to use conventional means of image capture by way of film and print. Manipulation. As a general point please keep manipulation of an image file to a minimum, limiting it to matching the image with the original medium. Filtering and other enhancements are not welcome.” I hope that helps. |
