Football in the 1960s
An article from the Guardian on the collection of football photos taken by by Blackburn-based father and son photographers, Wally and Howard Talbot. They were working from the 1930s to the 1990s.

In 1970 Everton's goalkeeper Gordon West drank in the Punchbowl in Maghull and simply exchanged pub banter like any other customer. He always sat on a bar stool by the bar and once I had been in there just a few times he'd nod to me and say Hello, Jock It was his leisure time as it was mine and I never thought of talking football It is just possible that the present Everton goalkeeper would be exactly the same but circumstances would prevent him from "risking it" He'd never get a minutes peace. Football was a just a game but in the twist to the words of Bill Shankly, it has become more than that. Mike |
