Default OM-1 batteries

I have been given an original OM-1 and would like to try using it. I know that the original battery is no longer available. I don't want to use the 1.5volt replacement if there is something closer to the 1.35v of the proper battery. I have put a 1.4v hearing aid battery in and it powers the meter. The readings look about right. Has anyone else tried this as a solution? If so, how long do these batteries last? They run for about 2 weeks in a hearing aid. Thanks.
Alex

I got a gismo from the Small Battery Company which is the same size as the old 1.35v. mercury batteries and fits in the battery compartment of my OM1. It takes a 1.5v battery, and drops the voltage to 1.35v. Works a treat, but not cheap.

I bought one of these years ago for my Leicaflex: http://www.butkus.org/chinon/batt-adapt-us.pdf It should fit your OM too.

Alex I found these when I was looking they are meant to replace the old mercury cells and deliver the same voltage.

I've always used a hearing aid battery with a collar in mine. It will last more than a couple of weeks, but I've never used the OM1 consistently enough to test the battery longevity. They're cheap enough and work.

Try:

Seems to be a direct replacement.

Thanks for all the replies. There seems to be enough options to find s suitable replacement. I'm going to make a foam collar to support a hearing aid battery. I can then compare meter readings with my Gossen , and test how long the battery lasts. Alex

There is a camera repairer in Derbyshire who will perform an Olympus OM 1 body conversion to take SR44 batteries, installing new foam door seals, mirror buffer and service.
Contact camerarepairer@btopenworld.com.
You end up with a 'new' camera that will last a further 20 years. I had mine done.

Apparently if you block up a couple of the tiny air-holes in the zinc-oxide battery it will last much longer without affecting performance. I presume light-meters are far less power-hungry than hearing aids.
