First few drops of rain you get on that fibre board and it'll grow to be an 11x14

Great review Dave.

Would it be feasable to swap the mdf parts with solid wood (before assembly by using the mdf parts as a template) to get a more robust camera, would you say?

I don't think that would be worth the effort, this project is, I think intended as an introduction to large cameras.
