Over the years, I've come to like a black background for portraits.
Initially I bought a length of black velvet, but that requires a stand the majority of the time. It is very heavy but works very well. I then bought a Lastolite look-a-like, pop up black velvet background, which works great, especially if taking it out and about. The reverse of it is white, but has a lot of crinkles on it, which can of course be gotten rid of with some intense light. I've never tried to use it as a background, but it makes a great reflector. For a white background at home, I painted a 6 foot x 4 foot sheet of plywood with white emulsion and it works great, but is less transportable, but it is possible. As for still life's, I have used a number of things over the years, from paper rolls to mounting board. Most recently, I've used some slate grey, textured and coloured lino floor tiles that were going very cheap at B+Q because of the torn cardboard packaging, so I bought 4 tiles for about £1.00 and they work great.
