Default James Ravilious: The Recent Past

There are two books coming out on 02/11/2017 from Wilmington Square Books on James Ravilious. The first is reviewed here by Caught by the River.

And one from Robin Ravilious about James.

Both are available from Amazon at significant savings. "The Recent Past" is particularly sumptuous although if you have James' previous works many of the photographs may be familiar. The biography looks as if it will be a good read, having just dipped into it so far.

Fascinating stuff. Once I has seen the pancake race my almost, until then, subconscious thought was became "live". It is that the pictures while not quite timeless could have been anytime from the early 1950s and in fact unless my memories of the late 1970s - mid1980s are now faulty I cannot remember similar scenes, hereabouts.

It may simply be that town living is a much better mirror of changes taking place.

It is clear that few of the pictures could have been taken with that kind of intimacy unless he was part of the scene

Thanks for that Richard. As a big Ravillious fan I was thinking of buying them, but as I already have two of his books I may think again about "The Recent Past".
Is the reproduction quality good?

The reproduction quality is very good, at least on a par with the earlier works.

Thanks Richard. I asked because the two books I have are quite different. In "An English Eye" the contrast level is quite restrained; on a par or even lower in contrast than original Ravilius darkroom prints that I have seen. He is on record as preferng silvery greys and an open rather than a harsh contrast.
My other book -"Down The Deep Lanes", 2nd edition, is a bit of a mixture. Some of the photographs are printed in quite harsh contrast; probably not how Ravilius himself would have wanted. (I think he was dead by the time the book came out.)

These two new books certainly sound like good candidates for my Christmas present list.

My "English Eye" is softback and yes, the contrast is rather low. "Deep Lanes" is better. In "Recent Past" the quality is consistently good, and the photographs are presented with minimal text - just a caption and perhaps a sentence or two of explanation. I certainly don't regret the purchase - but if you buy the biography as well you'll have two copies of many of the pics!

Richard, thanks again. You obviously don't regret getting both books. I think I'll do the same.
