Smile Camille Silvy @ NPG, London

For fans of small prints and portraits, this is a medium-sized exhibit of work from this Victorian era photographer who went onto specialise in carte de viste prints. It's a lovely exhibit and for those of you with not perfect eye sight, they have fresnel lens magnifiers at the entrance of the exhibit (to the left on the edge of the wall) for you to borrow to look at the prints more closely. They're about 6x9cm size albumen prints.

£5 entry fee (£4/£4.50 for concessions I think, not sure of the differences)

oh and originally found via Time Out's website then I forgot about it until Ian Leake mentioned it again in his blog.

It's a fabulous exhibition which really shows what the early photographers were capable of. For example, there are several prints made from composites of different negatives - the usual cloudy skies added to landscapes, but also street scenes. It's really, really worth making the time for this one.

It looks interesting, but unfortunately too far away for me.

I will definitely be paying a visit.

It's worth remembering that Camille was in the UK for several years before returning to France. He fought in the Franco-Prussian wars, was diagnosed as a manic depressive - which, in those days, resulted in being committed to a mental institution for life.

A tragic end for a very talented photographer.
