This is an interesting thread for me as I’ve recently started experimenting with Pot Ferri. The reason was that I have been printing for the first time on Ilford Warmtone fibre paper and seem to getting ectreme dry-down effects. After running some tests I ended up cutting back exposure by about half a stop and increasing the contest by half a grade. This gets me some way to a print that looks better when dry. But...a quick dunk of the whole print in some PotFerri followed by re-fixing, then warm selenium really lifts the end print. I use 20ml of 10% Pot Ferri to 640ml water which is what Tim Rudman suggests in one of his books (although he also suggests adding hypo to the mix. I didn’t have hypo to hand). I refixed in regular Rapid Fixer...no staining yet but it’s only been a couple of days.
I read in another forum that Tim Rudman uses PotFerri on 90+% of his prints although this may of course be applied by brush to selected areas only. I’m curious as to whether or not anyone else has experienced similar to me with the Warmtone fibre paper, although I might be better asking this in a new thread. Michael |

Mike, Terry S and San Miguel. The brownish stain is a result of incomplete processing - you can avoid staining with an action plan... Develop normally and stop in weak acid for a minute before fixing in plain hypo. Then use weak ferri carefully, returning to the fix from time to time to check your handiwork. Then fix for at least ten minutes before washing. You could try ending with a hardening fix. Observe thorough washing of FB paper.
