Mark, couldn't agree more about the DVD. Bought it a while ago and still find it inspiring each time I watch it.

Thanks for the 'heads-up' on the book - on my short list

Default Restless

I've just finished reading 'A Restless Eye' , and it's an essential book if you are a fan of Brett Weston . A very detailed and comprehensive account of his life. Gives a great insight into the Weston family and their trials and tribulations, too .
It's no surprise to me now that he made so many fabulous images. His life was absolutely dedicated to photography - to the expense of many of his personal relationships and in the early days to any sort of comfortable life with money for luxuries and even for enough food, at times .

I was very interested to see that a large fraction of his best work was made with the Rollei SL66, from the late '60's onwards, not the 10x8 view camera.

It's a book I'll be dipping into from time to time in the future, I'm sure.

Agree on both the DVD and the biography.
If you can find a copy, would also recommend "My Time with Brett" by Randy Efros. He was Brett's last assistant, and has many insights into Brett's thoughts and working methods.

Thanks Doug, I will look out for that . Is it a paperback ?

I also need to get 'Brett Weston - Master Photographer' . I didn't realise there was another nice Photography West collection later than 'A Personal Selection' . Anyway, that will need a bit of saving-up for ...
'A Personal Selection' is such a breathtaking book with great reproductions . Every time I look through that book I'm almost physically smacked in the face by the insight and originality of his composition !

Mark, the Efros book is a paperback and is co-authored by Rebecca Senf.
Agree about " A Personal Selection" - well-printed and good selection.
The Lodima Press Portfolio series is excellent - printed by Salto; but last nine volumes are delayed due to printing issues.

Default Purchase

Forgive me for gloating, but a couple of weeks ago, I decided that there was more than one way to hold long-term savings :

It looks a beautiful print and one that I'm not familiar with.

It's a fairly well-known print - if you have the books. It's in the 1986 'Personal selection' and the 1992 'Hawaii' books. In those it's credited as 'Banana Leaf, Honolulu 1980' or 'Banana Leaf, Hawaii 1980' . It was also part of a limited edition portfolio ( 50-off ) of 15 Hawaii images that Brett sold in the late 80's . This print was not one from the portfolios - was printed & sold to someone in the San Fransisco area in ~1983 .
The blacks and print tone are very nice indeed . The Amidol and Oriental Seagull paper are a very nice combination .
It struck me as one of my favourite images as soon as I saw it, when I first bought the Hawaii book .
