I get the "don't expose your film to unwanted thermal shock" concept.

However, if your first wash water is at 20C - just like the rest of your film processing - and then you slowly trickle in cold tap water over the course of several minutes (I use 5 mins) - you don't get thermal shock.

You can then wash the film in cold tap water for as long as you like.

It is important to remember that washing works because of the chemical gradient from the strong solution of nasty's in the emulsion layer to the unpolluted wash water causes diffusion to occur.

The rate of water flow to keep a healthy chemical gradient is amazingly low - you just need some turbulence in the wash water to prevent saturation of the emulsion/water boundary layer and then time to let it all happen.

Some years ago (1970s ?) Ilford proved you could wash a roll of 35mm B&W film to archival standards with only 1 litre of water.

The same slow trickle to drop the water and film to tap water ambient works for C41 and E6 which both happen at 38C - it just needs a bit longer to get the temperature down to mains water temp.
