Default Fuji C41

Still on the subject of C41 developer, I have sent away for a 2.5 ltr Tetenal kit because one of the bottles with the Fuji kit has discoloured and is now almost orange. Then last night I found an undeveloped 35mm Ektar film which I could not ever having exposed, but the plastic tub was marked as being exposed.

As a trial I tried it in the Fuji C41 to see if the chemicals were still usable.

To cut a story short, they were and I could not tell the difference between that film and an Ektar I used 8 months ago so I will keep using the Fuji until the time it lets me down..

Just because chemicals change colour over a period of time it does not always mean they have become inactive. I have found it is always worth a checking.

Yes photomi7ch I will agree with that. My RA4 is at best described as being dark chocolate brown in colour, but still turns out good prints with plenty of saturation. The current mix is around 4 months old. However I have always treated darkening of a film developer with suspicion. If it is 'off' there is no way to recover lost images. Rodinal used for B&W is the exception as we all know.

Incidentally, after finishing processing, I take it preservation step more by covering the NOVA processor top with clingfilm as well as the floating lids. When the chemicals cool down so long as you have managed to make a good seal, there is a slight vacuum formed so reducing any more oxidisation and evaporation.
