Ilford SFX 200
Hi folks. Infrared monochrome film is probably my least succesfull of my mono career.
But I have been given some rolls of SFX [ in date], I would like to use a R72 filter and Rodinal. Can any FADU people offer advice on rating and exposure and ordinal times. |

Hi Dave. I haven't used SFX with an R72 filter, but this combination is mentioned in Hugh Milsom's book on IR photography. He suggests the SFX filter, or the R72, will give best results. He advises rating at ISO 6 using a handheld meter, and bracketing one stop either way. The development section refers to Rodinal, but there is some confusion! In the general section about developers, he says that Rodinal can be used at 1:25 to 1:100. In the chart, however, he advises using 1:20 for 10 mins when using SFX in 'sunny conditions'. I suspect it should possibly read 1:25, instead of 1:20, which I've never seen recommended. I do see, however, that 1:40 and 1:45 are suggested for other films, so maybe 1:20 is correct! The book is quite good, if you can find a copy. It's published by Fountain Press. The only issue, as with all books on IR, is that virtually all the films mentioned are now extinct. SFX is the only one mentioned in this book that is still produced. Good luck, and I hope you have some success,
Alex. |

Cheers Alex.
I used 6asa [ I think was the lowest on my MX] with the R72 and the F8 F11 F16 as bracketed with the now defunct Efke 820 and was quite ok......it is the Rodinal dev times I am not sure about . Dave |
