Default Shutter tester:

Yes, thanks for that, it does look an interesting DIY project and useful too.

But, having seen the date on the bottom line which specifies December 2006, I wonder if some of the components are still available. Six years is a long time in electronics. When I am next in town, I will have a look in Maplins shop catalogue to look up some items. (Some time next week)

In reading the text, I feel there may have been something lost in the translation. Also, some americanisms are shown in the schematics for some components. Perhaps the Microsoft translator's contribution.

On leaving the site by pressing 'back to the top' it revealed yet more information and on other projects and it may be worth a cursory look.

I'm sure they are all available. The 74 series of logic ICs is many decades old but still available.

However, all you need is an oscillator running at a known speed, a resettable counter module and a means to gate the oscillator into the counter when the shutter is open.

Steve.

I put this one together in 2008. It was fairly straight forward and works very well. Think it cost me a tenner for the bits from Maplins including the box to house it. Many reports suggest its very accurate (works great for me) particularly for the lower speeds of shutters. My main use is LF shutters. You can still pick up second hand shutter testers that were made by Calumet that are much the same as the tester in the link but expect to pay about 10 times the cost of making one yourself.

Built the shutter speed tester as described in the previous post, all parts from Maplin uk.

M5K1 mini resistor 5.1 k ohm
NP64 photo transistor SFH 300-3
FH97 mini toggle switch
HF98 3.5mm stereo plug
YR60 2 x AA battery holder
PP3 clip to battery holder
LH14 box

Downloaded new version of Audacity, needed to plug a microphone into my laptop and run a (search for devices) to register a recording device. Then plugged in shutter tester. Used a LED torch to shine through the lens, started record and fired shutter three times. Magnified sound wave and measured length. It was easy to measure waves up to 1/250. Higher speeds are difficult to measure because of their shape. The sound wave looks like a small wedge, where it tails off it is hard to decide where the end is because it flatlines. Downloaded old version of Audacity and found this easier to use. Will have another play when I get the time. Not sure if the components I have used are correct. Will have another play when I get the time.

Great stuff Norm, you didnt mess about. Its a great money saving device. Would you share the total cost just for the record? Its also said that most Phototransistors will work with this device.
