Hi again all, as suggested I have now attached (I hope) some images to the post which are:

1. The enlarger itself(not in darkroom)
2. Negative Carrier (two sheets of glass)
3. Sample enlargement (shot today using 120film on a Brownie 620 Model E)
4,5,6. Equipment supplied with enlarger
7. Paper supplied with enlarger
8. How I am currently storing negatives (between two sheets of thin card)

As you can see the enlarger appears to work with 120 negatives so it may just be a case of getting a 50mm lens I hope but if anyone can see anything else missing please let me know.

Luke

Judging by the size of the enlargements, my betting is that the lens you have is around a 105mm which I do know was made by Wray. As lenses go they can be compared to a 1960 Ford Anglia to a modern Ford Fiesta. They do the same job but the Fiesta is much better at it.

Incidentally my very first enlarger was also made by Wray and an absolutely cracking bit of kit as well but had a Wray enlarging lens which was 'iffy'.

I have a Durst 50mm F2.8 lens which I do know is superb and I will part with, so if you send me a PM we can discuss price etc. It is boxed with the original receipt and in a plastic 'keeper'. I would place it about on the quality level as a Nikon 50/F2.8. Be aware this lens has a 39mm screw fitting, so may not fit yours.

The enlarger looks in nice condition to me and it should serve you well with a pair quality lenses.

The papers are good quality but seriously out of date. The chances of them being of any use for 'straight' printing are slim, unless they have been stored in a fridge/freezer. Don't throw them away though as they can be tried for lith printing and some other alternative processes.

I would ditch the chemicals as they are bound to be shot, even if stored in an unopened state they will have deteriated. I would say they are well over 10 years old.

However, you got a bargain for £5

Neil.

I would tape the edges of the glass carrier to reduce light spill. Black plastic tape or something similar. I bought a similar set up from someone 30+ years ago. The original carrier was missing, as were the condensers. The seller had added a home made diffuser. It also had a Wray lens. It worked, but it was frustrating to use. The improvement I found when I bought a complete enlarger was incredible. The lens you have should work with the 620 negatives. I would start using it, but keep your eyes open for a Durst, Meopta or similar at a good price. I would put the paper on eBay as separate lots. If you get £5/pack you could buy some fresh paper which is essential for satisfying results. If you see a model of enlarger you fancy, ask here if people would recommend it as a good buy.

Looks to be in good condition, the paper and chemicals are way out of date, the agfa paper has not been made for a long time, same for Kodak, I would not suggest printing on it, the chemicals the same, ditch them as they are way outdated, the rest of the gear looks very useful, I would get two lenses, a 75 to 85mm lens for 120 and a 50mm for 35mm, they should not cost the earth, good lenses are going for peanuts today, make or look for a negative carrier and you are away, good luck
Richard

I'd say that at £5 you have a bargain. Personally I'd try the chemicals and the paper - just for fun. You never know. Even if the chemicals are useless you could then try the paper with the anti-fogging chemical benzotriazole plus some fresh developer like Ilford MG. dev.

Happy experimenting

Mike

Thanks for all the help everyone. I am not sure how the papers have been stored but the guy I bought them off appeared to go into a pantry for them so I might have a go anyway just out of curiosity. I will also be looking to buy a 50mm and 100mm lens to replace the current 100mm in the near future however unfortunately I have recently been made redundant for the first time (at 21 years old) so cannot afford to buy any more equipment at the minute. As soon as I look to buy another enlarger, lenses and other such items I will definitely post to see if anyone has had positive experience with particular equipment.
Thanks again everyone,
Luke

Luke, sorry to hear about your redundancy. I am not at all sure I'd want to be a young person nowadays in terms of the uncertainty for long term employment.

In theory if the paper is only age-fogged then what follows may be redundant comments as all the paper in the pack is liable to be the same but just in case there are signs of light damage it might be worth trying the top sheet and then going down say at least 5 sheets and trying again. Paper which is fairly tightly packed can form its own light barrier and may be only light damaged on the edge further down the pack

Of course you may have already thought of this yourself.

Mike

Hi Everybody, Just a quick update on the enlarger. Firstly I would like to thank Richard for the lens, this arrived on Friday and is amazing, it fits into my enlarger but only just and as such I am going to get a new plate made this week from a relative who has a m39 tap bit. With this in mind full clean up and restoration of the enlarger commences in the morning as some parts have become ceased over time.
I also have tested the enlarger tonight using the paper and developer that came with the enlarger but using the stop bath and fixer I have for developing negs. This was a fail as expected but worth a try nether the less I still may try the paper again when I can afford to get a new developer.
Thanks, Luke

I am just re-locating my darkroom and have come across a a forgotten LPL 75mm F4.5 enlarging lens. It isn't very high quality, but it should be good enough to get you started. At least the diaphragm works! It has a standard 39mm screw thread mount

If you are interested send me a PM
