Default 65mm lens with a Shen Hao

Hi,
On ce again everyone thank you for your feedback and to continue I have another question. I know that with my camera (Shen-Hao HZX4x5-II) I have to use a wide bellows with a 65mm lens but do I need to use on top of that a recessed lens board or it is not necessary ?
Thank you
Jacques

You will struggle using a 65mm lens on a flat board with standard bellows. I used to use a bag bellows with my 75mm lens on my shen hao (TZ45bII).

Their website says 50mm minimum with the HZX4x5-II , so it may be possible.

Thank you everyone. Now my big question is "Do I go for a 65mm or 75mm". My first step will be to order a wide angle bellows and then I will decide. Thank you Jacques

If you go with a 65 then you have no room for shift or rise because it only just covers 4x5. And because your camera could take a 50mm lens I suspect that you will be able to use a little tilt without resorting to a bag bellows. i.e. I would decide which lens and how much room for shift or rise before you decide to get a bag bellows.
A 75 lens will only give you very little room for shift or rise but the xtra focal length may make it easy enough to do that without a bag bellows. Not having used your particular camera I can't be sure.

Could you use a lot of rise and fall ?

not with a 65. The Grandagon-N specs say the image circle is only 170mm at F22 infinity. That basically leaves zero room for shift or rise/fall on 4x5. The specs say you get a little but I doubt very much that you get any without the corners losing resolution. If the lens is focussed closer than infinity you get more but because there are no MTF charts for the 65 and 75 I can't see if any or how much.
If you can get hold of the MTF charts for the 65 and 75 we can have a look and see what they say.
The MTF shown in the pdf below is for the 90 so not really a valid comparison.

What type of photography are you thinking of doing? Architecture?

I would suggest that if you need a lot of rise and fall, then the Super Symmar XL 110 is about as wide as you can go and have a lot of rise and fall available on a 4x5 without having to be very careful about what you are doing.
A Super Angulon XL 72 might also be OK for distances of around 10meters but not further away otherwise you lose the rise and fall.

The manufacturers specs are a little optimistic IMO.

note that Adrians camera is different. It has minimum extension of 75mm whereas yours has 50mm. And he was using a 75mm lens meaning his camera would be at the absolute limit.
On your camera a 65 lens has 15mm of rail extension from minimum which usually eases movements a tad and a 75 would ease things a bit more.
