Propylene Glycol sources?
I'm looking into making some Pyrocat HD, all the chemicals are available at Silverprint except Properlene Glycol, where is the best place to buy this from in the UK?

I don't think it is available in the UK, but hopefully someone will prove me wrong.

There are some suppliers on ebay but they are selling lab quality products which are more expensive. You can mix Pyrocat HD without using PG, perhaps Leon will come in ans say what he uses?

Posts on the other site also seem to suggest that glycin isn't available in the U.K. Just as a matter of curiosity what's the issue with glycin in the U.K? Is it simply commercial viability because the users are such a small entity in comparison with the U.S?

I too mix Pyrocat HD with just water and it seems to keep well. I'm currently using stuff that I made back in January '09. However I only make a stock solution of 100ml so that it's not around for too long. I usually use this amount within 6 months. Solution B (potassium carbonate) should keep indefinitely.

As Barry said PG is available on Ebay; for example, here

Thanks for the link Trevor, it does seem quite expensive though.
From what I gather the only advantage in using PG to distilled water for solution A is its greater keeping qualities. Looks like I'II just use water then! |

Photographic glycin is only made by one company: The Photographer's Formulary in the US. Insufficient demand I guess for anyone else to synthesize it - tho I seem to remember that Wolfgang Moersch produces a commercial developer with glycin as a component but I don't know if he synthesizes the glycin or buys it from The Formulary.

Are we getting Glycin and Glycol confused or are they the same thing?

Good point: I was replying to Mike re' glycin... They are indeed not even close to being the same thing
Meanwhile, getting rapidly back on-topic... I wonder why it's so difficult to find over here - it's the major component of anti-freeze isn't it? I notice such weird and wonderful (and dangerous) chemicals seem quite readily available in the US (glacial acetic acid for example: every darkroom worker the US seems to have a few gallons of this stuff under their sink!)... |
