More of an accolade, or recognition of competency, it’s the same as calling someone a Master Craftsman.

I would agree with Dave, more of an accolade bestowed upon one by others in recognition of consistency in fine printing. Now, one might ask, what is a fine print What I consider a fine print, others may disagree. Interpretation goes a long way.

The concept of a masterpiece came from studios in days of old where apprentices were studying under a "Master". They were the final piece or pieces that an apprentice would produce before becoming recognised as a fully competant artist/artesan of whatever they were studying and ceased to be an apprentice. Typically an apprentice in an artists studio where often the piece was not painted by the master but rather under his direction.
Today the meaning is somewhat different in that people call a work of art a masterpiece when it is considered the absolute finest work from an artist.
The concept of a master printer in my book is one who has served their apprenticeship whether formally or not, and has attained a high degree of competancy in producing prints to the highest standards.
I'm sure there are a few on this forum who aren't recognised as such.

In the (litho) print industry, a master printer was one who employed anyone else... Shall we say that a master printer is one who happens to be better than we are.....sigh.
