Default Photography Online - Robin Bell

Whilst this YouTube show is mostly about digital, this month's show features Robin Bell working on one of Marcus McAdam's negatives. Marcus is a fan of film and has featured a Fuji GW690, a GX617 and has just started using 4x5.

Very interesting film if you miss out all the digital rubbish.

The bits of interest are at 12:40-23:02, 33:32-41:45, 42:15-42:44

He produced a fine print in two attempts.

As with Larry Bartlett on a half day course I attended in Manchester many moons ago, the way they managed to make the most intricate shapes with their hands in an instant and without trials was amazing. It is cut out card (cornflake boxes or 400 g/m2 are just the right thickness) for me.

And no test strips and no timer for Robin Bell!!

His book - Robin Bells's Silver Footprint - is also very informative.

Thanks for posting.

Mike

Many thanks, to you both! Just finished watching it and his printing skill is phenomenal.

Interesting how he does it but as far as explaining it for others to follow it's bit like asking how to build the Forth Railway Bridge and being told that you get a few girders and some bolts and then start building

That's not to belittle the skill involved in the D&B, exposure times and choosing the grade but quite the reverse in fact. It is the culmination of well over 30 years of printing.

There is no substitute for experience gained from a lot of hard slog

Thanks for giving the times of the relevant bits, Mike. Without those I might have switched it off after a few minutes

I have Robin's book silver footprint for more than 10 years. Thank you for pointing at this show. I got more of a feeling how a person Robin is.
An yes, I only looked at the times mentioned.

I use a very similar process in the darkromm, certainly not with that mastership. Except I cannot guess the main exposure time form th neg, I always need at leas one test strip.

But the "Don't talk anything, I am counting in my head" I use always in my workshops. But I count against a metronome.

As with photographs taken: the one you have just taken and before film development is your best world beating masterpiece only to be overtaken by the next exposure....in your own head, anyway!! Long may it be so.

And in case anyone doesn't know about it or haven't seen the trailer even, here is a link to a DVD about Robin Bell the darkroom printer.

I've bought and seen it, but I'd need a re-watch before I would review it, what with my fading memory cells...

Terry it looks like you need to join Vimeo to view the trailer which is a pity. I once joined Pinterest innocently and that put me off entering other spiders'webs

Mike, you shouldn’t need to join in order to view the trailer.
