Hi Michael,
my guess is we got the same batch.

Here is an attempt to show these irregularities:

Any ideas for the cause of it??

Miha

p.s. you are looking at about 7 sqmm on a 5x7 inch print.

EDIT: actually an area of 7x7mm in size.

Miha,

The prints I made had a sort of "embedded powder" coating, i.e. they appeared okay when wet. I'd have to test again to confirm my impressions.

A suggestion there may have been bubbles traped in the coating when it was applied.

I've had something similar with Forte Polywarmtone paper and wondered if it was some kind of 'blistering' caused by too strong a stop bath? But I'm really just guessing

I also think it might be a stop bath issue? Holes in the emulsion occurred in Lith Film due to using a chemical stop bath.

Thanks for your suggestions!

I'm afraid these are not holes. They are tiny grains on the surface. I can feel them even on an udeveloped sheet of paper.

Miha,

I've just been looking at a sheet of Vario classic printed on yesterday. There is a certain degree of roughness to the glossy surface, however the effect is not as prominent as I had remembered. The "deposits" on the earlier print may have had something to do with the selenium toner solution. Yesterday's prints were untoned.

I have been using the Adox Variotone some recently and find it a really nice paper with a rich warm tone - developed in Dektol 1:2.

I have only used the glossy and was wondering about the "semi-matte" surface. My preference is for an "eggshell" surface both in texture and sheen -- I think this is/was Kodak type-E or fine-lustre surface? Anyway, how would you describe the Variotone semi-matte surface?

Any other brand fiber VC paper that others like with this type surface?

Thanks! Mark

Hi Mark!

The semi-matt surface is very smooth, with no pattern embossed. I would say it' as smooth as the glossy surface. I can't compare it to anythig as Variotone is my first paper with this type of surface, but compared to Ilford MG 1K, which is glossy, the Vriotone semi-gloss surface is smoother, but with less shine of course. One more thing: developed in Adotol WA, the semi-mate surface is a tiny bit less warm compared to the glossy.

Thanks Miha -

Glad to hear the semi-matte is a smooth surface and will give it a try.
