Re. Loading film into plastic spirals, my almost infallible answer is to snip the sharp corners off the leading end of the film. Stops them catching on the radial spokes of the reel.

A very light spray of Mr. Sheen polish works well, wipe any excess off the reels. Warm the reels with a hairdryer, when using Paterson reels make sure the little ball bearings are moving freely. Use a film retriever to pull out the film from the canister, trim off the corners and start the film into the reel before you put it into your film changing bag. If the film snags split the reels and put your film in the tank put the lid on. Remove the reels from the changing bag, make sure they are dry/lubricated and try again. Did you have your jobo rotating as you poured the developer in I always switch the motor on after pouring at the same instant I start my timer.

I do wonder whether splashes reaching the film a few seconds before the rest of the developer could have this effect given that, say, the whole film gets 10 mins and the parts with the splashes get say 10 secs longer.

Hi Simon I think you have identified your problem but don't give up on the jobo I don't use one anymore but when I did I always pre-soaked the film for 5mins with the same temp water as developer. I hope you are able to rescue a photo for the family, best of luck.

Hi Simon,
shame about the negs and I'm sure that you will be able to make a print for the family of the lady. I do have a Jobo unit, but use the Paterson tank that I have for all of my film processing over the years, with never a processing problem. The only film loading problem that I have had, has been condensation build up when I've tried loading a film in my small changing bag, which has made the film a bit harder to push into the spiral. I now either now do this in the darkroom, or with my much larger pop-up changing bag - a Calumet bag / pop-up box bag. But I think the advise given so far is about right. Terry S |

Simon did you eventually discover the problem and thus solve it? If so what was it?
Thanks Mike |

Very strange!!! So he did. Maybe he got an email or something telling him that someone had answered his previous message. None needed Svend. Something strange must have happened somehow...? Terry S |
