Thanks for the link. I can just about recall the seeming proliferation of the guardia civil in our visits to Spain in '73 and '74. Always with guns on show, never a smile on their faces and never any apparent reason for them being there.

I love the picture of the little girl looking very prim and proper sitting under a table reading what might almost be a newspaper but was probably a kid's comic

It is only since having a granddaughter and grandson how much it has struck home to me that even at that age girls can look like little mothers but this never applies to boys

Some interesting pictures, depicting the 'other side' of Spain, before the tourist invasion that came later.

I do wonder though, what the woman is doing in picture 3. 'Tomelloso, Ciudad Real, 1960', painting a black line around the perimeter of presumably, her home?

Indeed, painting a black line around the whitewashed walls and light ground to show where the house is. I immediately thought: so that's why Spain has produced so many surrealists!

I have serous doubts about the last shot tho - with no movement in the ball and no sign of anyone having just kicked it (tho he may be off to the left, but the angle looks wrong for that) it looks like a posed shot to me - as does the one with the young woman facing away from the water - she looks too posed. Posed or not, the captured tonal range is enormous. Great stuff.

There's a further selection of his work here.

The Swiss photographer Michael Wolgensinger also worked very productively in Spain. I have a book of his.
