WTB: 300mm Large Format lens
I'm looking to buy a decent lens for my 10x8. 'Normal' focal length around 300mm give or take.... Must have a shutter that works ok or, at a push, one that can be repaired.
Thanks

Hi Tony,
West Yorkshire Cameras have one, a Schneider 300m f5.6 Symmar S. in excellent condition. £499. Alan |

Any preference for size and weight, an f5.6'ish copal 3 or an f9'ish copal 1 shutter?

Hi Tony,
There's a 300/9 Nikkor for sale in the US on another LF forum. Not sure if it covers 10x8 though. Mike |

Thanks Mike - looks like USA only unfortunately. I'll wait for a good one to come along from the UK as I'm in no great rush.
Cheers Tony

Yes, I have the Nikon nikkor 300M f9 and there's not much wiggle room for 8x10 at infinity but then it depends on what it is that you want to do with it.
I also have a Schneider 300 f5.6 that I've used with reasonable movements and had no problems, it's just the size and weight of the thing! I've tried the 210 f9 and 240 f9 g-Clarons too, both well stopped down for landscapes but I as yet, I haven't been overly impressed with foreground and corner details. I'm sure they'd be more than adequate for 4x5 and 5x7 though. Three things I learned with 8x10; 1. More bellows draw than you'd perhaps think for portrait work or anything reasonably close 2. 300mm sounds quite long but on 8x10 it's surprisingly wide-angle. 3. Interestingly, distortion appears less exaggerated than you'd expect.
