Books that are a good investment, pointers please.
I believe that there may be photography books that are not only a good read but they will also increase in value as time goes by. What are your reccommendations?

I've probably got a number of 'collectable' books in my collection, as I was lucky enough to get a grant a few years ago now, whilst at Uni, to buy books to read and learn from. The best books though, collectable or not, are the ones you go to regularly, whatever they cost to buy. Terry S |

Buying books as an investment is definitely the wrong way to go. Look at the 'Art' market where paintings are used solely as an 'investment' and are too valuable to be outside a bank vault and seen by the purchaser or anyone else. It just leads to hyped monitory value way beyond any real value however defined.
Buy them because they are of interest to you and as Terry S says you look at and make use of them. Mike |

Mike, agreed.
Most photo books will end up on a charity shop shelf eventually. The odd one will become valuable- I think some of Bob Carlos Clarke's books now trade at a premium, as does Madonna's (in)famous photo book from the 80's. Can't remember it's name, but maybe anything with Boobies in is a good bet. Buy what interests you. I have a mix of technical manuals and 'art' or picture books. Technical volumes are good for learning whilst books full of great images can be inspiring or thought provoking. I think the first couple I bought were Remains of Elmet by fay Godwin, and Hearts of Darkness by McCullin. Both changed how I thought about photography, and are with me still. |
