Greetings From Toronto, Ontario, Canada!
Hi Everyone!
I literally just joined, and now after being distracted by the Facebook thread and offering my feedback, I'm now introducing myself. I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Toronto Canada and I shoot both Digital and Film. (but I'll do my best not to use the 'D' word). Film gives me great pleasure. Its that anticipation factor, the feeling that you know you've got the shot as soon as you press the shutter release. The ability to experiment, try new films & developers and to really truly create a one of a kind piece of fine art. Why did I join FADU? Long story short, years ago I used to shoot film; had my camera stolen (lucky to be alive after that incident), and it wasn't until about 3 years later that I bought a digital camera. I've always loved film and I don't get the same feelings with digital as I do with film. So that led me to start acquiring analogue cameras, especially my Contax 645 - which then led to me wanting to develop my own black and white film and is now leading me to want to learn more about processing and traditionally printing 'real' photographs with chemicals in a darkroom. And I'm sure that once I get my hands wet, I'll be curious to learn about alternative processes. I even have the desire to learn about large format photography - but I'm taking it one step at a time right now. I currently live in an apartment building - so the option of me building a darkroom is out of the question. I do process all of my own black and white film, but then I scan it and print digitally at the moment. I've found a couple of local resources here in Toronto that will allow me access to a darkroom, but not really any resources that will teach it. I originally stumbled on this site as I was looking for information on the Ilford Microphen developer. I had shot a roll of Delta 400 in low light, as this was the only film I had with me at the time, and rated it at 3200. I've typically been using Ilfosol3 for my film, but after not being able to find any development times for pushing the Delta 400 I started searching - which was an unfruitful search, so I contacted the mothership (ILFORD) and they recommended Microphen to me. Still have yet to process that film - I just wanted to read up more about it first instead of potentially loosing a whole roll of images. In any case, I hope to find a lot of resources on this site and look forward to connecting with everyone and learning a lot! If anyone is interested in seeing any of my work or learning more about me beyond this brief introduction, my main site is http://www.kevincharlie.com but you'll be able to find more of my film work on my personal blog at http://www.kevincharlie.com/raw My personal blog is a mix of digital and film, but I'm slowly transitioning that blog into film only work with each successive post and the digital work will remain there as an archive.
