Sepia toner
Found this formula somewhere, cant quite remember when:
Bleach (1litre) Potassium ferricyanide 50g Potassium Bromide 50g Toner (1litre) Thiourea 2g Sodium Carbonate 100g Has anybody used this? I have all the chemicals except Thiourea, so before I went and bought some I was wondering about the results (or lack of). I only use rc papers, and will most likely be toning Ilford mg warmtone.

It's a fairly standard sepia toner and works well. A few tips I've found useful:
Use the bleach at half it's recommended strength or less. It's easier to control the final results. Pre-soak the print in water at the working temperature (less important for RC papers) Don't bleach to completion. I find retaining a little black holds the image together better. Sometimes it's worth just a brief dip in the bleach (or use a very dilute bleach) before toning. This will give subtle, sepia highlights and cooler shadows. Leave the print in the toning bath for the full recommended time. It's well worth toning a series of identical prints from full bleaching and toning through to a very brief bleach. Keep an untoned print for comparison. Wash the print thoroughly between the bleach and toner stages and on completion. I thoroughly recommend Tim Rudman's book 'The Photographers Toning Book'. That should be fine, it is a standard toner, Use the bleach at half strength, I also find that I use the toner also at half strength, bleach untill a small amount of detail is left, wash untill the yellow is gone, the tone till compleation, not set time but unrill the photo is as you want it, also remember that it is better to start with a slightly darker print thasn normal as sepia loses some of the contrast in a print, If you get to wnjoy the toning process then try either The Fotospeed RCVC paper or, better still, the Kentmere VC select RC paper which are the best RC Papers around by far for toning, best of all have fyn and don't be afraid to experiment.

The bleach you use at 1+4, 1 part bleach 4 parts water. Same with the Thiourea/Carbonate solution.

Some variations in colour are possible. See this page, towards the end:

Choice of warmtone paper is a good one. I feel the effect tends to be too garish on RC papers generally so Rob & Richard's suggestions to dilute the bleach for greater control and to not bleach all the way to completion is the way I would go. Actually, I never have bleached fully even with fibre papers as I prefer the look, but that is even more so with RC papers I have used (usually standard Ilford MG).
Have fun, Bob. |
