Default Home made camera

This is a home made camera I completed based on a 5x4 darkslide. The lens was taken from an old Kodak plate camera along with the viewing screen. There is enough coverage to give a full 5x4 image.

Nice one; I like it!
I'm interested in what the back looks like. Any chance of another picture?
And what is the purpose of the strip of wood across the top?

Looks like you have had fun building this. I've built a few myself over the years. and always found it rewarding.

Default home made camera

Thanks for that Alan. The strip of wood is another slot for the 5x4 darkslide, an attempt to give a wide - angle shot but the positioning is too close. I will post a few more images and try to find some pictures of the other cameras i have made.

I see. No ground glass, so you compose the picture using the viewer on the front.
Ian Grant will be interested in this. He does hand-held 5x4 photography.

What is the focal length of the lens, by the way?

Looks nice to me.
I like the view finder. I gather that it's got fixed focus. Did you manage to set it to infinity?

I often use movements (front tilt) when shooting 5x4 hand-held and two sometimes 3 lens options.

This is a nice idea though, don't confuse illumination with coverage (OP) the two are sometimes quite different, coverage or Image Circle usually given for f22 sometimes f16 is extent of the acceptable level of sharpness.

It should be set to the Hyper focal distance not infinity to get maximum DOF, the difficulty is deciding what aperture to set it for.

I shoot hand held at f22 or on odd occasions f16 using HP5 and a speed of 1/250 or 1/125 but then that's in Turkey/Greece where the light levels are high.

Default other 5x4 cameras i have made

Attached are some images of other 5x4 cameras I have made as student aids to help them understand different lens formats. They are a pinhole, a small wide angle dallmeyer 3.5 " lens and a Agfa Prontor 2 10.5 cm complex lens.

what a great looking camera. I also like the bit of carving on the front, gives it a character.

Me too. I have a friend who makes musical instruments and wooden boxes with similar carving.

Thats a really beautiful camera you have made there, as photomi7ch said, the carvings really puts the final touch to it ! Makes it stand out among dozens of home made wooden-cameras !
I would much rather have that one, then the Travel-Wide that has taken over the social media lately, after it finally was produced finished :P
