The Film Developing Cookbook - 2nd edition
I have been given the book - The Film Developing Cookbook (2nd edition) by Bill Troop, as a birthday present.
Currently I am working my way through it - but it is very interesting. I'm not sure I will even bother making up my own developers but the theories behind developer A v developer B are fascinating. If you are stuck for Christmas presents and you want to boost your technical knowledge of photography you will find the book highly informative. It is not the sort of book you can pick up and read for 5 mins between programs on the TV but I find it great for an hour or twos reading while there is not much on the tele. I also have the Darkroom Cookbook (3rd ed) by Steve Anchell - which is also excellent. Both are available from Amazon. Martin |

Martin -- agreed, this is an excellent reference. The descriptions of developer effects on image character and quality are extremely informative. I.e. acutance vs. fine grain vs. all-purpose developers, etc. -- great stuff there. Even if you don't roll yer own, the price of the book is worth it for this alone.
That said, I do toss together my own brews of simple formulas, like D76 and Perceptol. It's quick, easy and cheap. Not any more work than mixing packaged stuff, really. I doubt I would ever want to do that with more complicated formulas though...too much hassle. I think between this book and Thornton's Edge of Darkness, they are my most-read photo references.
